Evagelia Maravelias and Brean Wenckebach are Elika. The debut album "trying got usnowhere" came out on February 18th on Fiercley independent records. Elika describes their music as "blissed-out aambience with head-nodding beats that range from Downtempo to Trance to IDM." I have really been enjoying the first two songs on the Album "The Whip" and "Nowhere." They list their influences as "Slowdive, Karen Carpenter, Boards of Canada, Nico, Squarepusher and Flying Saucer Attack."

  • Liam Finn

I was on the road this past week but I did manage to grab a bunch of music and stick it on my mp3 player before I left. Before leaving I was certain I would be doing a post on The Kills this weekend, however, Liam Finn's song The Plot got stuck in my head all week and I could not get it out. The album came out way back in August of last year on Yep Roc Records. Pitchfork reviewed it in February of 2008 and gave it a 7.6 rating out of 10. So here are a few Songs from Mr. Finn and his Wikipedia Bio:

    Wikipedia:

Liam Finn is a singer/songwriter, born on 24 September 1983 in Melbourne, Australia; he moved to New Zealand as a child. He is the eldest son of musician Neil Finn (of Split Enz and Crowded House) and Sharon Finn.
Well known as the frontman of New Zealand band Betchadupa, in 2007 Finn released his solo debut 'I'll Be Lightning', which draws on his experiences from living in London in recent years. Finn chose to record the album entirely in analog at his father's recording studio, Roundhead Studios, in Auckland. In his concerts, he creates an instrumental layering effect by using a looping effects pedal; he is also accompanied by backup vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Eliza-Jane Barnes (daughter of Jimmy Barnes).
Liam and his father Neil covered The Beatles song "Two of Us" for the I am Sam film soundtrack. Liam Finn also contributed a song "Lucid Dream" to the soundtrack of 2001 movie Rain, which was directed by Christine Jeffs. Since the reunion of the band Crowded House in early 2007, Finn has become part of its touring band, playing concerts such as Coachella Festival, and Live Earth in Sydney. Liam's debut solo album I'll Be Lightning, was released in July 2007 in Australia and New Zealand on Liberation Music and was released internationally by Yep Roc Records on Jan 22nd, 2008.
Liam performed in New York at the CMJ Music Marathon on October 18, 2007 at the Yep Roc Records showcase. Liam was also the featured musical guest on CBS's "Late Show, with David Letterman" on Thursday, February 28th,2008, where he played "Second Chance".

    DeVotchKa

DeVotchKa has climbed to the top of the CMJ Radio 200 chart this week moving past Hot Chip and Vampire Weekend. The new album "A Mad & Faithfull Telling" received a postive review in SPIN magazine earning four out of five stars. Pitchfork seems to be less excited about the new album giving them a 7.7 rating out of 10. The Pants is currently luke warm on the album. Not enough rock for my taste. Despite the lack of rock "A Clockwise Witness" is a great song to get mellow with.

    Wikipedia Bio:

DeVotchKa is a four piece multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble that fuses Romani, Greek, Slavic, Bolero, and Mariachi music with American punk and folk roots. They take their name from Anthony Burgess' Nadsat word for "young girl," which is itself derived from the Russian word (девочка) of the same meaning. Based in Denver, Colorado, the quartet is made up of Nick Urata, who sings and plays theremin, guitar, bouzouki, piano, and trumpet; Tom Hagerman, who plays violin, accordion, and piano; Jeanie Schroder, who sings and plays sousaphone and double bass; and Shawn King, who plays percussion and trumpet.
Originally a backing band for burlesque shows, in their early years DeVotchKa also toured with fetish model Dita von Teese. Numerous nationwide tours in support of self released records earned the band an underground following. Their song "How It Ends" was featured on the trailer for the film Everything Is Illuminated, introducing the band to a widening audience. Their performance at the 2006 Bonnaroo music festival was considered a breakout event. In between tours, the band was picked by first time film directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris to score Little Miss Sunshine, a 2006 film that would go on to garner four Academy Award nominations. DeVotchKa, along with composer Mychael Danna, composed and performed the majority of the music for the film's soundtrack and were nominated for a 2006 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack.
Arcade Fire singer Win Butler suggested to DeVotchka that they cover the Siouxsie and the Banshees song "The Last Beat of My Heart". The musicians found the idea interesting and they recorded that song for the now critically acclaimed Curse Your Little Heart EP.[1]
DeVotchKa's latest studio album, A Mad & Faithful Telling, was released on March 18, 2008. DeVotchKa is currently doing a worldwide tour in support of the album's release.

    [edit] Biography
The band's name was inspired by an artist friend of the band in Akron with schizophrenia, who used the term "black keys" to describe people who weren't quite right. A double meaning lies in the fact that the black keys of a piano comprise a pentatonic minor scale when starting on E flat, which is often associated with blues and rock music.
The band is frequently compared to The White Stripes - another blues-based Lo-fi musical duo (drums; vocals and guitar) The band released their first album, The Big Come Up, in 2002, followed by Thickfreakness in 2003, and Rubber Factory in 2004. October 2005 saw the release of the DVD Live, recorded live at The Metro Theatre in Sydney, Australia March 18, 2005. In 2006 they released Magic Potion and the lesser known, Chulahoma EP, as well as a single version of Your Touch.
One of their trademarks is their preference for "medium fidelity" recording techniques such as using tape recorders and analog effects. The band does most of the recording, producing, and mixing themselves. The majority of the album Thickfreakness was recorded in 12 hours during one day. The band often experiments with odd recording and production techniques, such as leaving in background noises.
The Black Keys were included in the soundtrack of the 2003 movie School of Rock with their song, "Set You Free." The song can be heard when Jack Black takes Joan Cusack to a bar for "coffee." The Black Keys have achieved increasing critical acclaim and recognition since their debut album, which was praised by Rolling Stone magazine[1]. Time magazine named them one of the "10 Best Acts of 2003" [2] (behind OutKast and The White Stripes). They have supported a number of bands, and toured with Sleater-Kinney in 2003, as well as a short stint opening for Beck, and performing at Lollapalooza 2005. They have recently opened for Radiohead on the American leg of their brief 2006 tour. In addition to this, they were supported by the influential British radio DJ John Peel and appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and The Late Show with David Letterman. Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant [3], Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, and Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead are fans of the band. Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett has also stated in an interview that he enjoys listening to the band. The Arctic Monkeys' Drummer Matt Helders can be seen in a Black Keys T-Shirt in an interview on MTV's RAW. Their song "When the Lights Go Out" was featured on the film starring Samuel L. Jackson, Black Snake Moan and can be found on the soundtrack.
One of their songs, "Girl is on My Mind", was used in a 2006 Sony Ericsson advertisement, starring the tennis players Ana Ivanović and Daniela Hantuchova, gaining the band more commercial recognition. It was also used in a 2006 Victoria's Secret commercial featuring Heidi Klum and could be heard in the movie Rest Stop. Their song "10 AM Automatic" was used in the video game MLB '06: The Show, The O.C, and was also used in a 2007 American Express commercial starring Shaun White. "Your Touch" was featured in a 2007 Lee's jeans commercial, and can be heard in an episode of NBC's Friday Night Lights. They have recorded a cover of Bob Dylan's "The Wicked Messenger" for the I'm Not There soundtrack, and have recorded "If You Ever Slip," a song written by Jesse Harris for The Hottest State soundtrack.
The latest Black Keys record, Magic Potion, was released on September 4, 2006 in the UK and September 12, 2006 in the United States. It is their first recording for Nonesuch Records. According to an interview in Pitchfork Media, the band was collaborating on an album with Ike Turner, to be produced by Danger Mouse and released in 2007, but the idea was rendered impossible with Turner's death in December 2007.[4]
Their next album, Attack & Release (produced by Danger Mouse), was scheduled to be released on April 1st 2008, but leaked on the internet by March 4th. The first single from the album will be "Strange Times", with a supporting video featuring Auerbach and Carney appearing as themselves shooting "real" laser guns at one another during a game of laser tag. The video can be found on MySpace.com.
At concerts, fans have been known to shout "Let's Go Keys!" when they come out to sing.
